Nicole Gibson

Welcome to the Nicole Gibson Photography blog! Years ago, Nicole became captivated by the power of visual expression and storytelling, and today what she loves most is to create images about the world, about humanity, and about the human condition.

Nicole Gibson is an award-winning photographer based in Phoenix, Arizona. She was awarded First Place in the 2010 International Photography Awards, in addition to 8 Honorable Mentions. She is also the winner of the 2008 Vincent Versace Award for Photographic Excellence. Nicole’s work has been published in Photoshop User Magazine and B&W. Her work has also been sold to Bethany House Publishers, used by various non-profit organizations, and represented by India Picture stock agency. She is also a member of the International Guild of Visual Peacemakers

Portraits for peace

An entire community of African refugees have fled their home countries – and everything they know – and have been settled right here in Phoenix. Without war, violence, and oppression, they are now adjusting to a new life of safety and freedom. They’re also adjusting to a world entirely foreign from the one they have known. I’ve had the honor of spending a good deal of time with these lovely people over the past several months, and despite their hardships, they have arrived in Phoenix as remarkably beautiful people.

While Muslim refugees are likely to be looked down upon here for their religion, dress, skin color, etc., there are a group of us who have had the opportunity to not only build friendships with them and welcome them to our country, but to also help them with the enormous task of starting their lives over. The media these days has become so filled with stereotypes and hatred, and much of the American media would have us believe that because these people happen to be Muslim, they are a threat to our country, are our enemies, or some other hateful idea. But I’d like to voice another opinion. I have to say that the people I have personally met and spent time with are sweeter and kinder than I ever could have imagined.

I was recently invited to make portraits of the community members, so before you go about the rest of your day, I’d like to leave you with images of some truly amazing people. And maybe, just maybe, the next time the media (or anyone else) tempts you to hate a group of people, you might call these images to mind and be inspired toward peace instead.
