Uzbeks for the good of Phoenix

I want to tell you about some people I met this week. The very first evening I was introduced to them, they completely won me over with their gentleness, welcoming smiles, and quiet kindness.

If ever anyone would have reason to be hardened by life, it would be these guys, and yet upon meeting them, I would never have guessed what kind of history belonged to the exceptional people sitting before me.

As businessmen, they were working for good in their own country. Helping the economy, creating jobs, and for pursuing the good of their homeland. But they encountered persecution, and that is what landed them here. Now they are in Phoenix as businessmen, working to help OUR economy, create jobs here, and prosper the good of our homeland. Originally scattered throughout 13 different states, they united themselves and came together as a community of 200 men to combine their powers for good. They came to America on their own, forced to separate from their families, and many have not seen their wives and children for upwards of five years.

This week, they celebrated the grand opening of their restaurant in Phoenix, and not only was it an afternoon of new friends and good conversation, it was also an afternoon of delicious food!

Give it up for Phoenix’s new Uzbek friends!

And now for some bonus material. The Uzbeks also run a taxi company here in town (and give out free gum and bottled water to all their customers). I spent a few minutes one evening with this guy in the taxi he drives, and I just have one thing to say: he cracks me up!
